SUDBERIE, lost Domesday Book manor in Bermondspit hundred
The place name is not found after Domesday Book, but appears to have a name meaning 'south fort/manor', hypothetical Old English 'Suthbyrig' (dative case). It is possible that this is the later 'Preston House' in Preston Candover, which is 1167 'Candiura Stephani' 1328 'Stevenbur'' Middle English 'Stephen's manor', a name type common in the Home Counties (cf BRANSBURY). This would have to be the 'south manor' from being in the detached part of Bermondspit, south of the block of villages from Dummer to Herriard which constituted the Domesday Book heartland. Otherwise, account should be taken of the earthwork SW of Ellisfield below which is 'Berrydown' farm; or possibly 'Moundsmere Manor' in Preston Candover.
